Overall Evaluation- Student and Adult Radio

I think both my Radio shows met its age range. Both radio stations would attract its target audience and both have a range of announcements, sign posting and news announcements.
I preferred creating a student Radio because its aimed at my age range so I felt more comfortable. If I was to change my Adult radio, I would make the songs for a younger adult audience, for example, I would choose hot adult contemporary music instead of the older generations classic hits. This would have made the radio station popular with the younger teachers as well as the older teachers.

My strengths were the paperwork/ researching. I was good at researching adult and student radio stations to get ideas for my own. I listened to examples of news bulletins and announcements I would need to include. I typed up all my research and paperwork to get a professional finish.
My weaknesses were editing my radio shows. I struggled to get a clean finish because of the editing. If I was going to give someone advice. It would be to record your speech without any "ummm"'s or "Urrr"'s because it made it twice as hard to edit them out. I also learnt that a quiet empty room is best for recording and not a corridor as the background echos.

All in all, I felt I did really well to include all the information needed in my radio shows and am happy I have achieved a near-to professional standard. I feel that my shows are fit-for-purpose and will attract the right target audience due to the way I sounded and the amount of stingers/ announcements I used.

My radio show is similar to a professional radio shows because of the information given, eg infomercials, stingers, news bulletins, music, popular information such as concert dates and celebrity news. The way I speak is clear and suitable for my target audience. For example, in my student  show, I spoke casually like I would talk to a friend however with my adult show, I spoke more professionally as if i was talking to a boss or someone of importance. I did this because if I spoke to adults like I did to a younger audience, they wouldn't feel comfortable and may not understand what I was talking about.

BBC Radio 1

I think the songs on BBC Radio 1 are chart music so which is targeted at the correct target audience. The internal adverts are also aimed at the interests of 15-29 year old's. I think this because they advertise stuff appealing to teenagers/ young adults.

The station show I listened to was Radio 1's Dance Anthems. This is just one examples of their shows aimed at 15-29 year old's. In my opinion, this particular show was definitely aimed at teenagers/ young adults because of the way they talk and the music they play. If it was an adult radio show, For example; on BBC Radio 4, they would talk about different topics that would interest their target audience as adults. I think Radio 1 has music aimed at they younger generation, the music is modern and typical clubbing tunes.

I liked this because they had music I knew, because i am a teenager, this proves they are attracting a teenage/ young adult audience. If there was a song I didn't know, it was followed by a popular song I did know. This is a good example of reaching out to a wider range of audience. They play different songs now and again. However, the main music is pop as that's the popular music taste of the majority of their target audience.

I think they used a good range of Segue's, back announcements and sign posting. In my opinion, this is good because it mix's the music up which keeps the audience interested. The target audience likes a change, this radio station achieves that.

The genre was clearly hit music anthems. Top chart music is the most popular music for the target audience. However, The way they interact with the audience makes the target audience become involved with the station. For example; prize draws/ competitions,  social networking (Twitter), back announcements targeted at 15-29 year old's, news that the target audience cares about and much more.
To conclude, I think Radio 1 has achieved bringing in their target audience. Everything they do; from songs to announcements, is appealing to 15-29 year old's.

ASDA FM

(A) The purpose of an in store radio is to advertise their products. This makes their customers aware of discounts and new offers.

(B) The target audience for ASDA fm would be shoppers of ASDA. Only people who shop at ASDA would be interested in their discounts/ offers.

(C) ASDA fm has popular music and advertising. This means you can find chart music that everyone will know. I think they chose popular music because it has a wide target range.

(D) I think the music ASDA fm has to offer is a wise choice for their customers. I think this because ASDA attracts a wide range of people so by choosing chart music, they are reaching out to most of their audience.

Christmas Homework: Back Announcement

(A)

Google says:

Back Announcement Definition: In broadcasting, when the presenter gives viewers or listeners brief information about something they have just watched or heard, for example the name of the reporter or of the piece of music which was just played.

I say: This means Back announcement is the gap between the songs that tell you a bit about the song just played eg "That was a song by Rihanna, ... " This improves the radio show because it tells the listeners what the song is called and who its by. This will help if its a new song that's recently been released.

Codes of Practice / Regulation (Discuss here the implications of the MCPS-PRS, Copyright, Ethics, OFCOM, Legal Considerations.

The names of the two companies that licences radio stations to play music and pays royalties to the artists are PPL and PRS. These stand for Phonographic Performance Limited and Preforming Rights Society. If the club/ shop/ radio station doesn't have one of these then it would be fined heavily.

The name of the regulator of the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Industries is Ofcom. The Broadcasting code sets out the principles, meanings and "practices to be followed" by the Broadcast industries is called The Ofcom Broadcasting Code. The sections of the code are; Religion, Harm and Offence, Protecting the under 18's and Privacy.

The code that the UK Journalists should follow is called the National Union of Journalists. The code aims to treat everyone fairly and make sure Journalists don't publish something that may harm another person. The code is rules such as differentiate between fact and opinion, avoid plagiarism,  protect the identity of your sources etc. If one or more of these twelve rules are broken, it can lead to a huge disaster such as the phone hacking scandal. The rules protects everyone and delivers the information that is correct and backed up.

The BBC's Ethics and Values are:

  • Public Interests- tell the public what they need to know.
  • Truth and Accuracy- all articles have 2 or more reliable sources.
  • Impartiality-
  • Fairness- everyone is treated fairly/ in a non-biased way.
In my radio I had to make sure I didn't treat anyone unfairly or say anything that may offend anyone as this would be breaking the code. I had to make sure I clearly stated what was my opinion and what was facts as this would break the code as well. When analyzing my work, I had to make sure I checked my work with the code and the four bullet points above. This made sure my radio show wouldn't offend anyone or falsely accuse anyone.

Adult Radio Show

My Radio show goes on for 24 minutes and is aimed at adults for Central Sussex College. All the songs are Classic hit songs and that is the target audience i'm aiming for. There are 8 songs within my radio show all chosen from classic hit songs and put in a carefully thought out order.
I started with a bright song and ended with a bold song as this is one of the techniques that make a successful radio show. For example I started with "Boys are Back in Town by Thin Lizzy" and ended with "Return to Sender by Elvis Presley". I chose to start with Boys are Back in Town because its a happy        up-beat song to get the show started. I ended with Return to Sender because the song is well known by many people from the target audience.
I used 1 cross over within my radio show because the songs were quiet at the beginning and end so by joining up the songs you loose a long gap and the lyrics aren't interlinked so it sounds good. An example is "Jumping Jack Flash By The Rolling Stones" ending as "Return to Sender by Elvis Presley" starts. I also turned the volume down at the end/ beginning of all the songs so it builds up. I did this because it would introduce the songs as separate yet the two songs flow nicely.
On a few songs I cut the ending or beginning off to get rid of a long pause between finishing and starting a song. An example of this is the beginning of "The Tears of a Clown by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles"  because at the beginning, there is a long build up to the song so I cut off the beginning and gradually made the sound gradually increase.
To conclude, I think I did really well and used all the techniques I was taught. I'm proud of my radio show because I learnt a lot from the student one and used the tips i picked up from that. I achieved my goal to make a radio show aimed at adults which was hard as I don't listen to that type of music. This radio show wouldn't apply to students because the music isn't aimed at their generation and the techniques I have used wouldn't be used often enough. For example I would have used more cross overs, I may have only used 3 every half hour instead of 1. I would always start with a bright song and end with a strong song whether it was for adults or teenagers because that technique is for all radio stations and it works.

Student Radio Show

My radio show goes on for 25 minutes and is aimed at students for Central Sussex College. All the songs are hit radio songs as that is the target for students. There are 7 songs within my radio show all chosen from hit songs and put in a carefully thought out order.
I started with a bright song and ended with a bold song as this is one of the techniques that make a successful radio show. For example I started with "Spectrum By Florance and the Machine ft Calvin Harris" and ended with "Bad by The Cab". I chose to start with Spectrum because its a happy up-beat song to get the show started. I ended with Bad because the song is well known.
I used 3 cross overs within my radio show because the songs were quiet at the beginning and end so by joining up the songs you loose a long gap and the lyrics aren't interlinked so it sounds good. An example is "Feel the love by Rudimental" ending as "Black Heart by Stooshe" starts. I also turned the volume down at the end/ beginning of the songs so it builds up. I did this because it would introduce the songs as separate yet the two songs flow nicely.
On a few songs I cut the ending or beginning off to get rid of a long pause between finishing and starting a song. An example of this is the beginning of "Titanium by David Guetta" because the beginning is a very long build up to the song so I cut off the beginning and gradually made the sound gradually increase.
To conclude, I think I did really well and used all the techniques I was taught. I'm proud of my radio show because it was my first time making one and I achieved my goal to make a radio show aimed at students. This radio show wouldn't apply to adults because the music isn't aimed at their generation and the techniques I have used wouldn't be used as often. For example I wouldn't have used as many cross overs, I may have only used 1 every half hour instead of 3. I would always start with a bright song and end with a strong song whether it was for adults or teenagers because that technique is for all radio stations.

Radio Jingle

This is my Radio Jingle:

1.  What is a radio Ident / Stinger

This is basically the radio's identity. Online it says:
"Station identification (ident or channel ID) is the practice of radio or television stations or networks identifying themselves on air, typically by means of a call sign or brand name (sometimes known, particularly in the United States, as a "sounder" or "stinger", more generally as a station or network ID)."

2.  How did you make your Stinger in the Studio?

Audition was the software I used to make my Stinger. I learnt how to use the equipment, eg how to record, delete, edit etc. I chose a song I liked that would go along side my speech. I recorded the song very quietly whilst I spoke then I turned the music up and played the music for 10 seconds or so before I stopped recording. You couldn't hear me very well so I edited the recording to make the whole recording louder. I did this by stretching the recording upwards and downwards. Stretching my recording longways will make my recording longer and slower.

3.  What was special about the music that you used for your Stinger?

The music was Royalty free. This means the copy right laws don't apply because you have paid to use that song. The music I used was upbeat and is a similar song you would expect to find on "Live at the Block".

Music based Programming- Classic Hits

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/14kI4M9ZBgYtVtmXvbjs64r8fTD8UvWr3dbwVQdJOUMM/edit

I learnt a lot from Classic Hits as its not my target audience so I wasn't sure what type of music their would be. I learnt that classic hits are top songs from the past. The sort of people that would normally listen to this type of music is generally people who were born around the same time the music came out. For example if you tuned in and heard a Beatles song, people tuned in would know who they are as they were popular in their time.
I also learnt the meaning of "hammocking" and a "segue".

Hammocking: Solid hits either side of new music.
A Segue: song follow on from each other. Eg one song starts as another finished, combined.

Music Based Programming- Chart Music

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1wfCVbQE9-TDScGQk2-DlkRpSfTAAlQa6RvPyGnCoXrs/edit

I liked learning about this style of music as its the same style I listen to. I picked up on how people have to choose when to play songs, especially new songs, based on the time of day, the last songs played and the release date of the song. You cant play too many new song in a small space of time because people like what they know and if they don't know songs from that station ,they tune off. If you repeat the same song too much, again the listener will get bored of the song and tune off.

I also learnt the meaning of a segue and hammocking.

Smooth FM Radio

Radio Questions

1) Name: Smooth FM

2) Station Format: Soft adult contemporary

3) Target Audience: over 40’s

4) Genre: 1970’s classical eg Andy Williams, Lionel Richie etc

5) Programmes played: mainly interviews and news reports such as “Mark Goodier interviews Roger Moore”

6) What types of features: Interviews and news reports.

Radio Questions

1) What is "Music Programming for Radio"?
Music programming is when you choose your own music and program it in a certain order eg music is selected with a target audience in mind.

2) What is a stations "Music Format"?
Every station has a Music format, the stations have to choose songs ONLY in their format. For example if the station is rock, the station can only play rock music.

3) 2 Examples of of radio stations, the format and an example of 2 tracks:
Radio 1, Contemporary Hit Radio, David Guetta "She wolf" and Example "Say nothing"
Heart, Hot Adult Contemporary, Maroon 5 "Moves like Jagger" and Coldplay "Paradise"

4) What is an "ABC Playlist"?
This is when the playlist is put into 3 groups, AB and C. Group A is played a lot, Group B is played less and group C is played very little.

5) Explain how the choice of music would effect profits of a commercial radio station?
The radio station has a particular format so people who tune in expect to hear that type of music. If they tune in and the music is a different style or there is songs that they don't know, you will loose listeners and therefore loose money.

6) Explain some techniques in music programming to keep the listener interested, with examples.
Stations often play upbeat songs in the morning so their listeners get in a good mood. Stations also play new songs rarely to start off because listeners like songs they know however as the songs get known more, the station moves them up the ABC playlist so they are played more frequently.

Music Formats

We had the task to match up different types of music stations to the music style and music played on their Radio station. Above you can see we have 4 groups, these are;
  • Station name
  • Type of music
  • Artists
  • Songs
We had to search the songs found on the different stations. We decided to go to the different stations, online, to find the music style. This gave me a chance to listen to different styles of music to what im used to.
